Ancient Plant--Modern Day Miracle for Livestock Operations

From the early ages of the North American Indians through the more recent days of the pioneer settlers in the southwestern deserts to the present time, the desert Yucca has proved to be one of the most valuable plants known to mankind.

Ranchers who introduced their life styles and livestock into southwestern North America found it to be a real boon to their livelihood. Their cattle ate the plant – leaves, fiber and bulbs – and thrived on it.

Into more modern times researchers began to delve into the plants amazing qualities and found that previous uses of the plant were valid, but had only begun to scratch the surface of the benefits the Yucca in its various forms could supply.

Yucca products in liquid, powder form, or made into tablets are also used as food flavoring and meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration requirements for such use. (FDA Reg. 121.1163)

Yucca products have received favorable consideration for use in animal husbandry activities. They have met standards for use under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Act 21U.S.C.321(s).

The Yucca products also meet requirements for use under USFDA Act 21U.S.A.570.30(d) as "A (natural) food ingredient . . . widely consumed for its nutrient properties . . . prior to January 1, 1958, without known detrimental effects, which is subject to conventional processing . . . and for which no known safety hazard exists . . . and is generally regarded as safe."

Tests of Yucca products have been conducted at many leading universities such as Purdue, University of Illinois, California State University Fresno, North Carolina State, University of Colorado, and University of Minnesota.

These experiments produced unique results such as those reported in a 1981 issue of "Poultry Science" by N.L. Johnston and associates. These tests showed that Yucca products tested in broiler poultry performance and ammonia suppression produced significantly heavier and healthier birds than those control birds fed and reared on conventional rations.

Average increases in weight against time factors showed increases in tested birds of approximately five percent.

In extensive research feeding test of Yucca products at Purdue University, Dr. J.R. Foster, extension swine specialist, found that feeder pigs gaining from 57 to 227 pounds gained weight significantly faster than control animals and feed efficiency was markedly improved.

Foster also found that Yucca product infused swine showed even more remarkable growth response as floor space per pig was reduced. He noted that growth response in all tests involving 717 hogs was similar to that observed with the antibiotic Tylosin with the added benefit of better waste and odor control.

Although the magnitude of the gain response varied somewhat according to percentages of Yucca product fed (from 10 to 16 percent), the overall average weight improvement was 4.8 percent above control animals.

Foster noted that under certain environmental conditions and in the lower protein levels, a substantial feed savings can be incurred when Yucca extract products are added to the swine rearing process.

Experiments at other institutions of higher learning have proved similar results even to and including use of Yucca products in raising beef cattle and lambs.

There is no doubt that Yucca products have a great potential for improving the meat animal industry. With increased rate of gain and increased feed efficiency, poultry and meat animals can be fed out quicker with less cost and less damage to our environment.

Modern experimentation is proving that the Indians and the pioneers were correct in considering the Desert Yucca as somewhat of a miracle plant.
