There have been a half-million new chemicals developed since 1965 alone.
- Most of these organic pollutants are modern hydrocarbon chemicals such as plastic and pesticides.
- In 1991, the U.S. Congressional Research Service revealed that 10% of the 1.4 million underground gasoline storage tanks in the U.S. are currently leaking. There are also an estimated 16,000 municipal landfills and 181,000 industrial waste sites in the United States that leech contaminants into our water supplies. Agricultural pesticides and highway de-icing chemicals are other contaminants.
Contamination in the distribution system
Water can become contaminated during the journey from treatment plant to home. Lead, asbestos and cement pipes used in municipal water distribution systems can allow harmful substances to leech into drinking water.
Municipal Water
Chlorine, used by municipalities to disinfect water supplies, can react with naturally occurring organic materials in water. For example, decayed leaves can create trichlorethanes, a suspected cancer-causing chemical.
Dr. Joseph M. Price, MD in his book "Coronaries/Cholesterol/Chlorine", wrote that the cause of arteriosclerosis, resulting heart attacks, and strokes is none other than the chlorine in our drinking water.
A recent study by the U.S. Council on Environment Quality has established a definite link in the chlorination of water and cancer. One of the studies showed that the cancer risk among people drinking chlorinated water is 93% higher than among those who live where the water is not chlorinated.
Common Water Quality Concerns
Asbestos
It occurs naturally in rock, and is linked to several types of cancer.
Bad tastes and odors
These are caused by chlorine, commonly used by municipalities to disinfect the water supply. They are also carried by tea-like extracts of dead leaves, and by metals such as iron and copper.
Bacteria and viruses
They can cause infectious diseases such as typhoid fever and hepatitis. A chemist at a Texas university examined a glass of water under a high-powered microscope. He found tiny bits of paper, which turned out to be toilet paper, and 85% of the water contained blood-worms and hair shavings!
Arsenic
This can cause damage to the kidneys, liver and nervous system. It can also cause cancer.
Heavy metals
High levels of cadmium, mercury and lead in drinking water can cause nerve damage, mental retardation, birth defects and cancer.
Lead
It is estimated that 40 million Americans currently drink water containing more than the limit set by the EPA. Lead poisoning can cause mental retardation and birth defects.
Synthetic organic chemicals
One example is pesticides, which are carried into groundwater by rain. They can cause respiratory and nerve disorders.
Trichlorethanes (THM's)
These can be formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in water, such as from decaying leaves. They can cause cancer.
Volatile organic chemicals
Examples of these are gasoline, solvents, and industrial cleaners. They can cause many illnesses including liver cancer and leukemia.

A growing number of Americans are turning to bottled water as an alternative to tap water. However, bottled water is no guarantee of purity. Some bottled waters are actually no cleaner than ordinary tap water. Bottled water is also quite expensive, inconvenient and environmentally unfriendly. Every year millions of empty bottled water jugs are dumped in our landscape and add more waste to our environment.
Faucet-Mount and Pitcher Filters
These systems require filter cartridges. They are to be changed every 100 to 1,000 gallons.
Disadvantages: Changing the cartridges is expensive, time consuming, and environmentally unfriendly. Also, they do not allow water to be in contact with carbon long enough for efficient removal of the most harmful substances present.
Distillation
This method works by vaporizing and condensing water. It removes most bacteria, viruses, and chemicals.
Disadvantages: Removes all trace minerals, some of which are necessary for the health system. Using this method also requires electricity, and most models are energy intensive and costly to operate.
Reverse Osmosis
This method uses pressure to force water molecules through a membrane. Systems using this method are effective in removing fluoride, nitrate, pesticides, heavy metals and brackish water problems.
Disadvantages: It is expensive, takes eight to nine gallons of water, and three hours to produce one gallon of treated water.
Ultraviolet Disinfection
This method kills viruses and bacteria, and also can eliminate some organic chemicals by using UV light.
Disadvantages: This method is expensive and ineffective in water that is colored or has high turbidity.
Softening (to "soften" water)
This method exchanges sodium for magnesium and calcium, and is effective for removing metals such as magnesium, iron, lead and radium.
Disadvantages: Systems using this method add sodium in the process, which may be harmful to your health. They are not effective for removing unwanted organic chemicals, tastes, and odors. They usually treat the entire home water supply, not just water used for drinking and cooking.

Four Stage Filtration
- First, water passes through a one micron filtration pad, small enough to remove all visible particles as well as Giardia, Cryptosporidium and other microbiological Cysts.
- Second, water flows through the patented KDF media which has been tested and certified by NSF for ANS/NSF standard 61 for drinking water system component – health effects. It removes or reduces:
- Chlorine, Lead, Mercury, Iron (III), (II), Arsenic, Asbestos, Lindane Pesticide and Malathon Pesticide through the natural process of electromagnetic oxidation/reduction.
- Third, there is more absorption and reduction of Chlorine, Bad Taste, Odor and Sediment with the (GAC).
- Fourth, water flows through another one micron filtration pad for further reduction of undesirable particles. The end result is total elimination or greater reduction of a wide variety of contaminants.
